Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery,started in the year 2000 by Dr. K. Varadharajan was established with a cardiothoracic intensive therapy unit and an operation theatre capable of performing open heart surgery for package as low as Rs. 65,000/- . It has steadily progressed over the years to perform the whole spectrum of adult cardiothoracic and vascular surgical procedure and paediatric cardiac surgery .

The department is currently led by Dr. P.R. Murugesan with senior consultant cardiac surgeon Dr. R. Krishnanand Pai, Dr. M.S. Murugan, Chief Cardiac anaesthesiologist Dr. C. Ganesan, Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologist Dr. Prashant A Biradar and Dr. Saranya Vishnumathy.

The department faculties are expertised with beating heart CABG, total arterial revascularisation, LV aneurysm repair, Repair of Ventricular Septal rupture, Heart valve Repair and replacement, Redo Cardiac Surgery, Tracheal reconstruction, Emergency lung resection for massive hemoptysis, Aortic Aneurysm surgeries and Revascularisation for Acute Limb Ischemia. The department is also equipped with Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery expertise.

The department is actively offering heart lung transplantation programme and supports the institution in multi organ transplantation.
The department has achieved several milestones notable among them are contribution to many government initiatives, including the ongoing chief minister extended health scheme initiated by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.
Services offered for Video assisted thoracoscopic surgery, mediastinoscopy, Thoraco abdominal exposure for various general and orthopaedic surgical procedures.
The division of extra corporeal circulation technology has successfully conducted ECMO support, IABP, LV assist device, cell saver for blood salvage during major cardiac/non cardiac procedures.

Heart lung machine support for non cardiac surgical procedures including resection of renal cell carcinorma with cavo atrial extension.
The team CTVS is enthusiastic in conducting animal trial for cardiovascular research including Low cost medical device development with well established animal facilities .
As part of spreading health awareness, it educates the patients by circulating health education pamplets on areas such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement, prevention of blood clots in deep veins and the science behind anticoagulants.

  • 12 bedded Cardiothoracic and vascular surgical intensive therapy unit equipped with an advanced Haemodynamic monitoring system, drug delivering system and ventilator
  • Intensive care is given by 1:1 staff patient ratio and supervised by senior consultants round the clock
  • Well equipped with world class OT table, light,anaesthesia workstation, Heart Lung Machine with Maquet Biopump and IABP support, harmonic scalpel for mammary artery dissection, full set of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgical (MICS) procedures trans esophageal echo cardiogram , and inhaled nitric oxide( iNO ) plant
  • CTICU and operation room is linked to the hospital intranet and PACS system.
