Dr Reena Rai Head of the Department of Dermatology

Dedicated to research and patient care related to skin diseases, the Department of Dermatology was founded in 1989, the same year the PSG Hospitals was established. Its founding Head of the Department was Dr Sumitra, who laid the roadmap for the future. From its modest beginnings, it has gone on to offer some of the best facilities available for both inpatients as well as outpatients.

From keloids, or the growth of extra scar tissues, and vitiligo, a skin condition in which white patches occur, to hair loss and eczema, a disorder with severe itching and oozing, the department offers various detection measures and treatment. Some of the treatments include iontophoresis, or passage of electrical current through skin.

The department also offers phototherapy, whereby ultraviolet (UV) light is used to check the rapid growth of new skin cells, to treat psoriasis. A patch testing facility is available to detect the cause of eczema. A slew of niche services including laser treatments and popular dermatosurgeries like hair transplant and mole removal are available. An upgraded photo therapy and a diagnostic laboratory are also available. The latter is involved in bed side investigations such as KOH mount, slit skin smear for AFB and Giemsa stains for Herpes. Skin biopsy and Immunofluoresence are other special investigations

The department, which started offering Diplomate of National Board (DNB) courses in 1998, began offering PG diploma courses in 2001 and PG degree courses in 2006. The department also boasts of an array of research papers in national and international journals, apart from numerous papers presented in prestigious dermatology conferences. Over the years, the department’s persistent quest for excellence in research while focusing on healthcare is well appreciated.
