The Foundation Day Celebrations of PSG Institute and Medical Sciences and Research (PSG IMS&R) was held on 30th September 2023 at the PSGIMSR Auditorium.
In the year 1985, the government of Tamil Nadu permitted the starting of three medical colleges for the very first time in the state, and PSG IMS&R was one of them. The Medical College began on the 30th of September, and from then onwards, this birth anniversary of the institute is celebrated as Foundation Day.
The chief guest of the occasion was Dr K Narayanasamy, Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. He presented the Scroll of Honour to the distinguished alumni. Speaking on the occasion, he praised the activities of the PSG and Sons Charities Trust in fostering education in this part of the state. He thanked the Medical College for its unconditional support for all the university’s activities. Delivering his chief guest address, he mentioned that it is important for the alumni and the alma mater to recognize each other, strengthening the bonds and leading to increased engagement between the two groups. He appreciated the alumni for their hard work, meritorious service and recognition from the community. He emphasized that alumni enhance the institution’s reputation. He requested the alumni to participate in mentorship activities and share their experiences with today’s students. He applauded the PSG for its outlook on research and innovation.
The four alumni who received the Distinguished Alumnus Scroll of Honour include:
1.Col. (Dr). M Muruganantham, Anaesthesiologist, Army Medical Corps. He joined MBBS at PSG IMSR in 1988. He pursued his higher education in Anaesthesiology and Critical care. He joined the Army Medical Corps and is a true patriot upholding the pride of our nation. He became a leader and participated in United Nations Peacekeeping activities.
2.Dr. Deenadayalan Munirathnam, Clinical Lead, Department of Paediatric Haematology Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre, Chennai, belonged to the class of 1989. After his postgraduate in paediatrics, he sub-specialized in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology and has over 17 years of experience in the field. He had set up Bone Marrow Transplant units at Global Hospitals, Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital and Rela Institute, Chennai. His main objective is to save young lives from Cancer and keep the families’ hopes alive.
3.Dr. Premkumar Balachandran, a 1990 batch alumnus, is the Clinical Lead at the Institutes of Hernia Surgery & Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. He chose to become a surgeon and sub specialized in minimal-access surgery. In the field of Bariatric Surgery, Hernia Surgery and Robotic Surgery, he is considered a master craftsman with deft hands. He is a trainer of trainers in these fields. He is a sought-after resource faculty in his discipline. He is a key-hole surgeon of international repute.
4.Dr. A. Senthil Vadivu, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Dr VK’s ENT Clinic, Chennai started her MBBS course in 1995. She developed a passion for Otorhinolaryngology, popularly known as ENT. Working at premier ENT centres in India, she decided to sub-specialize in Cochlear Implantation, an option she offers to people with severe hearing loss resulting from inner ear damage. She helped many children and the elderly listen to the sound of life!
Delivering the welcome address, the Principal of the Institute Dr. T. M. SubbaRao said “Today’s awardees are exceptional and path-breaking. Their current reputation and achievements are the reasons for their success today. We also see great potential in the future, bringing further glory and honour to the Alma matter and vindicating the founding principles of the PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust.”
he Managing Trustee of PSG & Sons Charities Shri. L Gopalakrishnan delivered the Presidential address. He said, “Alumni are valuable resources for educational institutions, and events such as these bring in a sense of belonging and loyalty, leading to more robust alumni networks. Alumni have been giving back to the alma mater in many ways, such as scholarships, research grants, mentorship, job opportunities, etc.” He expressed happiness to see the tremendous strides they have made in their disciplines. “They have already received various honours through their societies and nongovernmental organizations. We are confident that the success of our alumni enhances the institution’s reputation and impact in the medical field”, he added.
