Physiology

The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (PSG IMS&R), Coimbatore, was established in 1985 with the inception of the medical college. As one of the founding departments, it has played a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, research, and clinical physiology. Over the past four decades, the department has earned recognition for academic excellence, innovative teaching, quality research, and clinical services.

The department offers MBBS and MD (Physiology) programmes. Since the introduction of the MD programme in 2000, it has trained numerous postgraduate students who now serve as academicians, researchers, and clinicians across India. Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) is delivered through integrated teaching, early clinical exposure, simulation-based learning, self-directed learning, and skills training.

The department is equipped with modern laboratories and advanced facilities, including ECG, computerized polygraph systems, spirometry, autonomic function testing, pulse wave velocity (PWV), ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, treadmill testing, nerve conduction studies (NCS), Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA), and Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), supporting education, research, and clinical services.

Research

Faculty and postgraduate students actively undertake research in clinical physiology,cardiovascular physiology, autonomic function, yoga and meditation, simulation-based study, medical education, and translational physiology. The department promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and contributes to peer-reviewed publications and national and international conferences.

Clinical Services

The Department provides specialized clinical physiology services that support patient care, diagnostics, and research. In collaboration with the Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Dr. K. Deepalakshmi has been performing gastrointestinal manometry for the past 10 years, contributing to the evaluation and management of patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Sanavitacon 2024

The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, hosted Sanavitacon 2024, the National Conference of the Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu (APT), from 3–5 October 2024.The conference began with a pre-conference workshop, “Metabolic Syndrome: Connecting the Dots,” featuring sessions by Dr. Sowmiya, Dr. Raja Priya, Dr. S. Vidya, and Dr. V. Thiagarajan, covering epidemiology, biomarkers, complications, management, and research opportunities in metabolic syndrome.
The scientific programme featured eminent speakers including Dr. Sathya Subramani (CMC Vellore) on blood pressure variability using CMCNIBP, Dr. K. N. Maruthy on autonomic modulation and dynamic pupillometry, Dr. G. Rajendiran and Dr. K. Suvetha on the role of TMAO in cardiovascular disease, Dr. Jaideep C. Menon on subclinical atherosclerosis, Dr. Vanajakshamma on cardiovascular health in women, Dr. V. Ramamoorthy on exercise in cardiovascular rehabilitation, Dr. S. Vijayabaskaran on stress physiology, and Dr. D. Srinivasan

Neurotronics 2022

The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Coimbatore organized the CME “Neurotronics 2022” under the aegis of the Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu (APT) on 19 November 2022, along with the State-Level Physiology Pedagogy Competition. Scientific lectures included Dr. Dilara, President APT on Regulatory Mechanisms in the Maintenance of Muscle Tone, Dr. Muthu Kumaran, Neurologist on Clinical Disorders of Muscle Tone, Dr. Kaviraj, Neurophysiologist, NIMHANS on Neuromodulation in Neuropsychiatric Disorders, and Dr. Sathyaprabha, Neurophysiologist, NIMHANS on Autonomic Function Tests in Neurological Disorders. Around 70 faculty members and postgraduate students participated, and the pedagogy competition provided an excellent platform for postgraduate teaching skills.

Tumor Physiology 2022
The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Coimbatore, organized the webinar “Tumor Physiology” on 21 January 2022. The inaugural session featured Dr. T. M. Subbarao, Principal, PSGIMS&R, and Dr. Viji Devanand, President, Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu. Scientific sessions included Dr. Jeyalakshmi Lingaraj, Professor , Physiology, KMCH IHSR on Physiological Mechanisms of Tumor Cell Invasion and Migration, Dr. Subash Chezian, Hematologist, MIOT on Pathophysiology of Tumors, and Dr. Kishore Kumar, Hematologist, MIOT on Cancer Treatment Updates and Research Opportunities. More than 50 participants from medical and allied health disciplines attended the webinar.


Sports and Science Webinar (2021)

To commemorate World Athletics Day, the Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Coimbatore, organized the “Sports and Science” Webinar on 7 May 2021. Dr. Muthu Prathiba, Professor of Physiology, Saveetha Medical College, delivered a session on Health and Exercise. Dr. Vijayalakshmi, Sports and Neurophysiologist, Neuro Foundation, Salem, spoke on Physiological Assessment of Cardiovascular Function in Sportspersons, while Dr. Nithya Manoj, Head, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, GMKMCH, Salem, discussed Physiological Assessment of Musculoskeletal and Neurological Function in Sportspersons. The webinar emphasized the importance of exercise physiology and physiological assessment in sports medicine.

Quizentera 2019
The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (PSGIMS&R), Coimbatore, organized Quizentera 2019, a State-Level Undergraduate Quiz on the Gastrointestinal System, in conjunction with a CME on Gastrointestinal Motility. Dr. K. Deepalakshmi, Associate Professor Department of Physiology, PSGIMS&R, delivered a lecture on “Principles of Gastrointestinal Manometry,” followed by Dr. L. Venkatakrishnan, Professor and Head, Department of Medical Gastroenterology, PSGIMS&R, who spoke on the clinical aspects of gastrointestinal motility disorders. The programme attracted approximately 300 undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and faculty members from institutions across Tamil Nadu and provided an engaging platform for integrating physiological concepts with clinical practice through scientific sessions and the state-level quiz competition.

Biostech 2016
The Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Coimbatore, organized the CME “Biostech 2016”, accredited by The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University with 20 credit points . The programme focused on the effective use of instrumentation in respiratory and neurophysiology. Expert lectures were delivered by Dr. K. N. Maruthy on principles and methods of physiological instrumentation, Dr. Harsha Hallahalli on Evoked Potentials and their Clinical Applications, and Dr. Ramanathan on Evaluation of Respiratory Muscle Function. The CME was attended by faculty members and postgraduate students from medical colleges across Tamil Nadu.
