National Conference on Climate Change and Health

The National Conference on “Climate Change and Health” was organized by PSG Institute of Medical Science & Research, PSG
College of Pharmacy, PSG College of Nursing, PSG College of Physiotherapy in association with PSG CARE on 17th November 2023. The
objective of the conference is to discuss Climate change and role of health professionals in tackling the issue. Climate change is one of the
major threats to humanity in the 21st century. From extreme heat waves to drought to intense hurricanes, it affects human health directly and
indirectly. While worsening air pollution can cause an impact on cardiac and respiratory systems, climate change changes in vector behavior
leading to newer disease epidemics. The role of health professionals in this catastrophe is paramount not just in treating the disease but also
prevention and mitigation. The conference proceedings book was released by Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Rudramoorthy, Director, PSG CARE. Over
100 delegates participated from various streams and 14 delegates presented their research outcomes as poster presentations.

The conference is inaugurated by the Prof. Dr. Rudramoorthy, Director, PSG CARE along with Dr. Sudha Ramalingam, Director,
Research & Innovation, PSG IMS&R, Dr. M. Ramanathan, Principal, PSG CP, Dr. A. Jayasudha, Principal, PSG CON, Prof. R. Mahesh,
Principal, PSG COP.

Dr. M. Dwarakanath, Former Director, DSTE and Member Secretary, Puducherry Pollution Control Committee, Visiting Faculty –
DESM, BDU delivered a talk on “Climate Change and influence on health” and presented the importance of various climate change policies
and implementation challenges. The session was well appreciated by all the delegates.
Dr. K. Mahalinganathan, Former Scientist, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) delivered a talk on “The
science of Climate Change” and shared his expedition experience in Antarctica and arctic regions. He also explained the need of the hour
measures to tackle the climate change approaches from all. The talk is well received and applauded by the delegates.

Conference Outcome

In the conference emphasize was given on the responsibility of institutions to take initiatives for sustainable climate change action plans from
health professions.
The conference was concluded with a motto to establish green campus initiatives and eco friendly concepts in the events and also more future
events to be organized on climate change and health.
